Today, Qatar air flew into Cardiff Airport for the very first time – opening a new route to the Middle East from the Welsh capital.
To celebrate the new route, the Qatar aircraft was welcomed with a water salute – whilst a male voice choir provided a fitting soundtrack.
This is the first time that South Wales, and indeed the South West of England have been linked directly to the Middle East. Significant markets such as Audtralia, New Zeleand and Asia are withing reach now for local passengers.
Roger Lewis, Chairman of Cardiff Airport, said: “This is a pivotal moment for Cardiff Airport, for Wales and the South West of England. The far reaching consequences of this service for passengers and businesses will be transformational.”
The First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, said: “I am delighted to welcome the first Qatar Airways flight from Doha to our capital city, Cardiff.”
Qatar currently the United Kingdoms 3rd largest export market. It’s hoped that strengthening its links to the regions will help everyone benefit from over £35 billion of investment annually.
